ArtCells : Generative Art Platform on RGB++ Sponsorship Proposal

Dear Nervos Community Members,

We are honored to introduce ArtCells, an algorithmic art publishing platform based on the RGB++ protocol. ArtCells aims to integrate art NFTs into the CKB ecosystem, allowing CKB users to more easily collect art NFTs while promoting CKB’s digital artworks to a broader market. This initiative will enhance the influence of CKB and Nervos in the field of digital art.

Who are we?

We are a technical team composed of former product managers from major companies, full-stack engineers, and dedicated Bitcoin believers. Over the past six months, we have primarily focused on the development of BTC ecosystem technologies. Our recent technical achievements are showcased in this hackathon project: HackathonDemo. Additionally, we have launched a generative art project based on BTC inscriptions, which can be found at ColorMask.

Why are we building ArtCells?

Art has always been a brilliant gem in the spiritual world of humanity. In 2009, the Bitcoin network emerged, combining asymmetric encryption, distributed processing, consensus algorithms, and economic principles, providing a secure home for digital assets. Since then, digital artworks have found a value anchor in this digital era. Artists can now authenticate their works on the blockchain, offering a perfect solution for the ownership of digital creations. In 2021, artworks issued via Ethereum smart contracts were frequently auctioned at top auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s, with some pieces reaching prices comparable to those of traditional art masters. After years of development, digital artworks have finally secured a place in the art world. As contemporary art of the digital new frontier, digital artworks are certain to gain due recognition as blockchain technology matures and digital currencies become more widespread.

What’s the significance of ArtCells for CKB?

From the transaction share on Ethereum, the trading volume of art NFTs once accounted for 35% of the total NFT market, making it a significant part of the NFT market. On the Tezos blockchain, the fxhash art platform even boosted the liquidity of the entire blockchain’s tokens. As an idealistic and technically advanced blockchain ecosystem, the CKB ecosystem should have an art NFT platform, both from the perspective of market liquidity and enhancing CKB’s influence in the digital art field.

Why are we doing this project now?

With the advent of the BTC Ordinals Protocol in 2023 and the implementation of the RGB++ protocol this year, now is the best time to develop projects within the CKB ecosystem from both a technical and market perspective.

Firstly, the Ordinals Protocol has expanded the NFT market beyond Ethereum, making NFTs based on UTXO technology feasible.

Secondly, the RGB++ protocol has broken down the interaction barriers between BTC and CKB, allowing NFTs to flow between BTC and CKB.

Thirdly, there is currently no platform in the CKB ecosystem dedicated to art NFTs.

Lastly, we believe that BTC Layer 2 will inevitably see the emergence of applications on a scale equal to or even greater than those on Ethereum. Building now is a timely opportunity.

Challenges of ArtCells

1: The creation and implementation of algorithmic art require both proficiency in graphics algorithms and a solid foundation in artistic aesthetics.
2: The design of the storage format for generative art NFTs and the implementation of display methods.
3: The design of the MINT interaction process, which differs from other NFT MINT processes and requires interactive creation.
4: Debugging the storage protocol and developing and optimizing new features of the protocol.
5: Collaboration with top generative artists.

What is our budget application and why is it reasonable?

Our budget is $96000, with the CKB price at the time of the proposal initiation being 1CKB = $0.01555, which equates to a total of 6,173,633 CKB.

It will be used for the following:

Server rental
Smart contract development
Product design and UI design
Front-end development
Back-end development
Mainnet contract deployment costs
Documentation
Collaboration with artists
Community building
Feature iteration and continuous development

We believe this budget is reasonable as it will support all aspects of our project, including development, design, user support, and continuous improvement. In the following sections, we will introduce our milestone plan. We will only receive the grants for each stage upon completing the corresponding milestones.

How do we plan to work? What are the milestones?

Nervos

How will you structure the community building plan?
What are the details in this subject?
Most projects that have launched for Rgb++ seem very low on engagement across the board, low Twitter numbers and replies, what will you plan that is better than the rest?
I see that your twitter has only a couple hundred followers.

Thank you very much for your question!

How will you structure the community building plan?

As mentioned in the proposal, we will establish a Project Operations Curatorial Clerk. Members come from three directions. The first one comes from the CKB community selecting members who are interested in art projects and are willing to take action. The second is that ArtCells itself will have members of the project team responsible for operations to participate in the operation. The third is artists or professional art operators who are familiar with generative art and industry.

What are the details in this subject?

With the promotion of the curatorial committee, we will establish the project’s official Twitter, TG community, and artist works display website. Regularly update the official Twitter, whitelist lottery and other activities to promote retweeting. Publish introductions and tutorials on generative art and digital art in the TG community to activate the community and enhance awareness of digital art.
It is expected to cooperate with KOLs such as the art CKB community regularly (every 2 weeks) to carry out AMA discussions and promotional activities.

Most projects that have launched for Rgb++ seem very low on engagement across the board, low Twitter numbers and replies, what will you plan that is better than the rest?

Here are a few points that I believe have led to low community engagement:

  1. Early Stage of RGB++ Technology: Most teams are primarily focused on development, with resources concentrated on R&D. RGB++ is a solution based on the UTXO model, which is significantly more challenging for engineers to develop and learn compared to Ethereum. Feedback from engineers around me and the comparison of the number of Ethereum and BTC projects (excluding ERC20-like projects) both indicate higher technical difficulty, leading most teams to spend their time on R&D.
  2. Limited Resources for Early-Stage Teams: Most teams are in the early stages and have limited resources, so they have not hired dedicated operations personnel and have not invested resources in operations and community building. Some projects might also face issues with product positioning or actual demand insufficiency.
  3. Lack of Commercialization Experience: Another issue with engineer-led project teams is the lack of commercialization experience. From the beginning of the project, there was no emphasis on community operations and market promotion, which are indispensable parts of a commercial project. If the founders do not recognize this issue, they will not invest time and resources into it. From the project budget applications of previous projects, it can be seen that many projects did not mention market operations.

Improvements Our Team is Making:

  1. Technical Expertise: Our team has extensive experience with BTC technology, as detailed in our proposal. This allows us to save human resources in CKB R&D, freeing up resources for more community-building efforts.
  2. Resource Allocation for Operations: Although our team also has limited resources, we have already allocated resources to handle operations and community building. Compared to large project teams, our resources are still insufficient and we are still in the development stage. With sufficient funding, we would immediately hire professional operations personnel.
  3. Emphasis on Market and Operations: Our team members have startup or independent studio management experience and place a high emphasis on market and operations. Although our web3 experience needs improvement, we have integrated product direction and community positioning into our product development from the design stage. Therefore, we are confident that with enough emphasis and operational resources, combined with CKB’s growth in the BTC ecosystem, ArtCells will provide a unique community experience.

I see that your twitter has only a couple hundred followers.

Yes, what you see is my personal Twitter. Our first project also did not have an official project Twitter due to limited resources, and we were unable to invest heavily in community operations. This is one of the reasons our team is applying for sponsorship.

Thank you for your professional questions. We will continue to invest resources in operational issues and enhance community engagement.
