Thank you for these questions! I’ll share my perspective on this, based on what I’ve seen happening in the ecosystem.
1. Why was APP5 selected?
From my understanding, the APP5 team isn’t entirely new in terms of people. It’s largely composed of OG developers who have been part of the Nervos ecosystem since the beginning, many with roots in the original Cryptape and the initial Nervos core teams. So, while the “APP5Labs” entity is new, the talent is deeply experienced and familiar with our technology.
I see this move as a strategic consolidation, bringing a wealth of experience together into one focused team. The goal seems to be to create a strong, dedicated entity to maintain and improve the core infrastructure for the long term, much like how ConsenSys supported Ethereum in its early days.
2. How did JoyID come into the mix?
JoyID has been a flagship wallet in our ecosystem, developed by Nervina Labs. As part of this broader strategic focus on creating a more cohesive developer and user experience, it makes sense to bring JoyID under the same roof as other critical user-facing tools like the explorer and Neuron. To ensure a smooth transition and product continuity, key members from the original JoyID team have also joined APP5Labs.
3. What is the hope for synergies?
By having one dedicated team oversee these core components, I believe we can see much tighter integration and a more unified user experience. For example, the APP5 team is already working on a redesigned CKB Explorer and a new Fiber Explorer.
When the same team is building the wallet, the L2 explorer, and the mainnet explorer, the potential for a seamless and polished product suite is much higher. This creates a stronger foundation for other developers to build on top of.
Overall, I see this as a sign of the ecosystem maturing. It’s a deliberate move to focus our best resources on building a stable and user-friendly foundation for the next phase of growth.
@zz_tovarishch has done a great job of outlining things there. I’ll add that the UTXO Stack team coordinated with App5 to hand over JoyID as they have been making some changes in what they work on.
Additionally the App5 team has been operating these products in the ecosystem since last year:
It’s been great to see that they feel confident in the opportunities they are identifying building on top of CKB and while this change has been surprising at times, it does feel like a great opportunity to invigorate the ecosystem.
